Our Aviary:
Our aviary is located in Fresno which is in Central Valley California. The aviary is on the same 3 acre property we live on so we get to spend lots of time with our birds.
The Breeder Facility:
Our breeders have spacious indoor cages where they are protected from the elements but get plenty of fresh air and natural light from the large windows that surround the aviary. Our birds are provided with plenty of natural branches for perches and swings. Most of the trees we use are Eucalyptus, Pecan, Citrus, Pomegranate or Walnut to name a few. These are just a few of the trees that are grown on our property.
What we feed:
All of our birds are fed a base diet of Roudybush pellets, our own blend of cooked grains and pasta, sprouted seeds and grains as well as fresh fruits and vegetables in season. To our daily mixture we also add live culture yogurt. We feed a minimal seed mix as a treat or as a regular part of their diet when the weather is cold and they need more fats in their diet.
Babies and Hand Feeding:
We will leave the babies in the nest with their parents for up to 4 weeks as long as we can be certain the parents can and will care for them. Generally we will pull the clutch for hand feeding around 2-4 weeks. On occasion we have pairs that will not incubate or feed their young. In these rare cases, the eggs are pulled for incubation and we will hand feed from day one if the eggs cannot be fostered to another pair.
We use Roudybush hand feeding formula to feed our babies. It mixes up very smooth, not gritty and is easily digested. Another plus that we have found is that it does not contain a high sugar content like some other formulas. Our babies are kept in temperature and air flow controlled brooders. They spend their days in the living room and in the evening they are moved to the bedroom so we can hear if something should go wrong during the night.
Babies Growing and Social Environment:
When our babies are very young, they spend most of their time sleeping. The babies are housed in brooders that regulate the temperature and humidity. This reduces the stress on the baby and help to ensure their health and well being.
As the babies grow and mature, they will graduate from the brooder to a juvenile play cage during the day. They are introduced to all kinds of colorful toys with different textures and shapes. We also add perches and climbing toys to play on.
What we strive for:
We strive to raise birds that are people friendly first and foremost. We want to raise babies that are confident and well socialized to make the transition to it's forever home a pleasant experience for the baby and the new birdie parents. We want to raise babies that become an interactive part of their new household where they will be loved and cherished.
